Intimate and Meaningful Spring Wedding at a Private Home
Sometimes the weddings that stand out most in my mind are not the biggest ones. They’re the ones thoughtfully built around the moments and the people that matter most.
That is exactly why N & A chose to get married at home. For them, home was the venue that made the most sense. It’s where they host the people they love most, time and again. Where the best nights happen around the dinner table or spill out into the spacious backyard. Choosing to get married at home wasn’t just a logistical decision, but a statement about what they value.
The backyard, transformed for the reception, felt like a natural extension of that. String lights, familiar faces, the comfort of a space they knew so well. Guests weren’t just attending a wedding, they were being welcomed into the couple’s home, which is the greatest form of hospitality there is.

After getting dressed, the couple had a scheduled time for a first look in the front yard. A quiet moment to see each other and take it all in before the guests arrived.

On our first phone call, N & A described their vision for the ceremony. They pointed me to a scene from House of Cards. Specifically, the moment when a character is sworn into office in his own living room—no big fanfare. Just the weight of the moment, felt deeply by the few people present.
That was the feeling they were after.
Surrounded by the closest people in their lives, they exchanged vows right there in the living room – the same room where they’ve shared so many meals, hosted friends, and built a life together. The space already held so much of their story before the ceremony even began. And when they stood together and made their promise to love and cherish for a lifetime, it was deep, intentional, and real.

During cocktail hour the guests enjoyed a Mariachi performance, passed appetizers, and cocktails crafted by Jason’s Catered Events. When dinner came, guests were invited to fill their plates at the buffet line.

When it came to reception coverage, N & A provided very specific inspiration for those photographs, too! They sent over a scene from the movie Up in the Air, where George Clooney and Vera Farmiga’s characters share a moment on the dance floor as the camera peers through a crowd. It feels as if you’re catching a glimpse of a private moment from across the room.
The image stuck with me the entire reception.
Rather than stepping too far onto the dance floor, I held back. I allowed the crowd to become part of the frame, shooting through the layers of guests to find the couple – locked in their own world, seemingly unaware of anything but each other.
Shoot-through scenes like this are one of my favorite things to incorporate into my wedding photography because it helps to create this feeling like you’re really there, in the moment.

Over the years, I’ve photographed weddings of all sizes, and I can confidently say that there is something about intimate weddings that sticks with me. It distills everything down to what matters most. When the guest list is small, it allows the couple to connect better with each guest. This intimacy gives space for the depth of emotions to flow in a way that might otherwise be held back.
