I first met Johana years ago when I photographed her sister's wedding in Pacific Palisades, CA. The family has graciously kept in touch with me over the years and when Johana recently became pregnant, she emailed me to ask if I would photograph her growing family too. I was touched and so thrilled that I would document this special time for Johana and her family!
We selected a cute park in Long Beach for our location. It had lots of beautiful trees, a big lake with ducks, and some cool rock features near the water - all of which made for great photos!
The family chose a great color combination of dark magenta and navy blue for their outfits. I love it when clients opt for a color palette for their attire rather than putting everyone in matching outfits. A color palette allows each member of the family have flexibility and personality with their outfit choices. It also looks way more authentic in the final images!
When photographing families with young kids, I like to alternate between formally posed images and fun interactive pictures. I've found that this helps the kids stay excited and engaged throughout the session. By incorporating fun pictures for the kids, it makes it easier to ask them to hold still for a few more serious pictures and they feel great about helping me make pictures that their mom will love too. As icing on the cake, this alternating process creates a much more authentic selection of pictures in your final gallery, and it allows you more freedom when you're picking out pictures to hang on the wall or put in an album!
