A few weeks ago I met Jessica and Micah in Downtown Santa Ana to photograph a romantic couples session for them. This part of Santa Ana is special because when they got married several years ago they had some of their wedding photos taken at the Old Orange County Courthouse. Of course, we had to revisit that historic spot and take a few updated photos there too!

One of the most common questions I get when I’m talking to couples for the first time is “We’re not models, do we have to know how to pose?” The answer is no! I have rarely, if ever, worked with models during my photography career. Part of my job is to help you look your best during your session. So, the first thing I do on every shoot is take a few minutes to walk the couple through some basic poses that we’ll build off of to create different looks.

As soon as I finished my brief posing overview with Micah and Jessica I told them I wanted to try something a little different to start off our session. They both looked a bit skeptical when I led them to a parking garage elevator and clicked the button for the top level. They probably thought I was crazy, but I knew it would be worth it once we got to the top.

At the top of the parking garage we had an incredible view of the city and the clouds overhead. I used a reflective surface to catch a reflection of the clouds in the frame and created some of my favorite images of the session. This is why I love photography; with a little creativity you can create cool photos in the most unlikely locations.
