“If You Want to be a Better Photographer…”

“If you want to be a better photographer, be a better person.”- Jerry Ghionis

Last weekend I was able to attend a workshop hosted by one of my favorite wedding photographers, Jerry Ghionis. Towards the end of the day he made the above statement; and while there were a ton of great take-aways from the day, I think this was by far my favorite. Such a simple statement, but it’s so mind-blowingly true. The best photographers are ones who truly have a love for people, as well as the craft.

To be perfectly honest, I almost didn’t go to this workshop. I was having a rough couple of days and wasn’t feeling too great, but I forced myself out of bed and I’m so glad that I did. I came home empowered and inspired.

I feel like I should have this quote tattooed to my forehead. It goes without saying that I want each person I photograph to be happy at the end of the day, but this quote to me is a reminder that I want to take it a step further. To me, photography is more than just a business or a means to pay the bills. This workshop once again reinforced to me why I started shooting to begin with; I love the creative process of creating a great photograph. Even more than that, I love making my subjects/clients feel good about themselves. We live in a world filled with far too much self loathing. To give someone a glimpse of their beauty- to make someone feel appreciated- is a privilege and gift that’s truly rewarding.
